Google Glass Cost $1,500 to Buy – $80 to make

The Price For Google To Make Google Glass
Google Glass is making super hero movies seem less super. The smart glasses allow users to browse the internet, record videos, get directions, etc. from the wireless headset.
Currently users are limited to what Google has labeled as ‘Glass Explorers’. Google Glass Explorers can be describes as a lifestyle beta group. Instead of solely providing the smart glasses to developers, Google Explorers was created as a way to show how people can make use of the device.
The Glass Explorer program is invite only. It is a lottery system If you are invited (sign up at google.com/glass), the price to purchase Glass is $1,500. Google ran a 24 hour sale of Glass to the public – which they sold out.
The fifteen hundred dollar price tag to purchase Google Glass’ has created quite the stir. Especially since the smart device has recently been estimated to have a production cost of around $80.
Teardown.com recently took the smart spectacles apart. Upon analyzing the parts and construction, it was concluded the cost of producing a pair of Glass is around $79.78. So let’s call it eighty dollars for a pair of Google Glass.
The sales price is almost marked up twenty times the cost of production. It will be interesting to see how much the “consumer ready Google Glass” will cost. More interesting, will be how the Explorers are rewarded for their loyalty and keeping the project afloat.
Google could probably keep Project Glass afloat with their own bank account. But the lifestyle testers have made the product more and more desirable, so credit should be given to Google for creating a simplistically brilliant marketing strategy. As well as the credit and recognition for the Explorers continued innovation, of Google Glass.
